Earlier this year, Nokia filed a patent for a "Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester" for mobile phones. The aim is a self-charging mobile phone that will be powered by the energy created from a person's movements.

Tony Jones of Coral Reef Wetsuits has created a solar surfboard which is anticipated to go on sale soon after its approval in June this year. The patent-pending solar surfboards include 6-9 foot surfboards and 10-12 foot paddle boards.

Breakthroughs with sensing in the human body

Holst Centre and others are working on body area networking to monitor vital signs, control drug delivery according to need and otherwise progress towards bionic man and woman and care of the disabled and elderly. Unfortunately cutting into your body to change batteries brings with it a significant percentage of mortalities, not just pain and infection. Energy harvesting within the body is potentially helpful but biobatteries and thermoelectric generators provide only weak amounts of electricity in such applications.

Morgan Technical Ceramics ElectroCeramics (MTC ElectroCeramics), is undertaking a Shorter Knowledge Transfer Partnership (sKTP) project with Glyndŵr University in Wales. The project, which will last 26 weeks, is to design and build an energy harvesting demonstration system that will provide a renewable source of energy.

Solar powered implanted glucose monitor for diabetics

Biorasis has developed a state-of-the-art implantable sensor that could replace the use of conventional finger-prick monitors for diabetics. The implantable sensor, which is rice grain-sized, is called Glucowizzard and could be injected into a patient's wrist to continuously monitor glucose levels for approximately a year. The Glucowizzard is solar powered.

This is despite the fact that the ancient Roman soldier carried prefabricated fort parts and food, with no support staff. A major problem today is the batteries.
