How climate impacts solar and wind power supply

How climate impacts solar and wind power supply

One of the challenges with solar and wind power is that, on any given day, the sun isn't always shining, and the wind isn't always blowing when we want it to. Now, zooming out, researchers at Columbia's Earth Institute have found that the same could be true on the scale of years to decades.

Packaging multinational makes corporate switch to solar energy

In recent years, multinationals have been pursuing renewable energy sources as a way of meeting their corporate responsibility targets of achieving power through renewable energy sources. Last year, internationally-operating corporations including IKEA, Apple, and Amazon added 325 megawatts to the United States' installed photovoltaic capacity, and will reduce carbon monoxide levels in the U.S. by 2.4 million tonnes each year over their lifespan - in 2018, both Apple and Amazon confirmed that they are now powered by 100% renewables.

New York to dramatically increase energy storage

New York to dramatically increase energy storage

New York State Public Service Commission approved two initiatives to dramatically increase New York's energy efficiency and energy storage targets to combat climate change. The new energy efficiency target for investor-owned utilities will more than double utility energy efficiency progress by 2025, reducing the state's energy consumption by the equivalent of fueling and powering 1.8 million homes. The energy storage initiative sets New York on a trajectory to achieve 1,500 megawatts of storage by 2025, enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes, and up to 3,000 megawatts by 2030.

NASA 20kV flying microgrid

Innovators at NASA have developed a variable-frequency, alternating current power system to enable turbo-electric and hybrid electric propulsion. The technology uses double-fed electric machines and a high-voltage, variable-frequency power system to significantly decrease (by 85%) the weight of an aircraft's power electronics for turbo-electric propulsion, while still providing high specific power and variable thrust.
