Foot powered generator

Weza is a Swahili word that means "power" and is also the name of Freeplay Energy's foot powered generator. Powered by human energy through step action the Weza Portable Energy Source, is able to jump-start a boat or automobile battery, and power a wide array of instruments and accessories.

Incorporating a purpose-designed foot pedal and corresponding, folding stabilizer arm the Weza's internal, sealed battery can be charged efficiently using human energy. It is also possible to charge the unit using mains power or by wind or solar options. The Weza can by charged by any solar panel or wind turbine that is rated for a 12V system. The foot pedal and stabilizer collapse, enabling the product to be stowed away in a water resistant carry bag. The faster the peddle is cranked, the more energy that is stored in the internal battery.

The Weza provides power to devices via a 12 V DC cigarette lighter adapter. (A 3V-12V variable DC voltage output adapter is available as an accessory.) It features an internal rechargeable non-spill lead-acid gel battery capable of jump-starting a vehicle or boat with a flat battery, as well as powering a range of other appliances. For emergency situations, the Weza jump-starts motors (heavy-duty jumper cables are included), powers hand-held GPS's and VHF radios, and charges satellite and mobile phones. Five minutes of step charge will provide around 2hrs 10 minutes on a cell phone.

The Weza is 26.4cm high and weighs 8.5kg and the casings are made of polypropylene and glass-filled nylon. The transmission is made of a combination of acetyl, glass-filled nylon and aluminum, while the input levers, pedal and stabilizer arms consist of a glass-filled nylon. All plastic materials used are thermoplastics and can be recycled.
