Conventional Li-ion batteries are quickly reaching a plateau in terms of performance. This creates a bottleneck also for cost reduction. Even if they do get significantly cheaper, several hurdles limit their application in wearables, the IoT, and future consumer electronics, a market worth tens of billions of dollars. The four criteria that need to see improvements over the coming years are: safety, performance, form factor, and cost.
Solid-state batteries have the potential to address all four parameters, but battery start-ups face a very competitive environment where the incumbents have strong incentives to recover their nine-digit investments in Li-ion by keeping conventional Li-ion technology afloat. 2015 was the pivotal year for solid-state batteries after 20 years of R&D development. New materials have surfaced, but some technical challenges are still unanswered.
This webinar, based on the upcoming IDTechEx report 'Solid-State and Polymer Batteries 2017-2027: Technology, Markets, Forecasts', will give an overview of the maturity of different chemistries, as well as indicate current and future trends and markets. In particular, the following questions will be answered:
- What is the difference between bulk and thin film solid-state batteries?
- How do inorganic and polymer electrolytes differ?
- What companies are leading in solid-state materials?
- How will these changes affect the incumbents in the Li-ion industry?
- Can solid-state batteries be manufactured at a competitive cost?
We will be holding exactly the same webinar twice in one day. Please register for which ever session is most convenient for you.
