At the IDTechEx conference Off Grid Energy Independence the reinvention of solar and wind power were a focus this year. In that spirit, Dr. Ralph Paetzold, CEO of Opvius of Germany presented on "Beyond Replacement Strategies: Printed OPV as Enabler for Novel Products" including how he sees his organic photovoltaics OPV as a building, wearables and artist's material. He highlighted how the move to cities means that there will be a need to make electricity with zero emission "everywhere".
"In 50 years one third of human mankind will live in approx. 100 megacities".
He presented, "Facts that change our energy landscape:
Increasing total energy demand - Plus:
- 40% of all energies are consumed in buildings
- Including a lot of primary energy sources
- We cannot shift those 40%, without massive investment
- We also cannot treat renewables with the same logic like centralized power generation...."
Here are a few of his slides.
OPV is non-toxic and highly flexible and customisable. In the past, life has been an issue for flexible versions but he claimed that his flexible product has long life and he showed applications on buildings. Low efficiency is not an issue when large area is possible and affordable. He does not sell on price.
