The IDTechEx event Internet of Things Applications taking place on November 19-20 in Santa Clara, CA is unique in terms of addressing the applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) - for consumers, industry and governments. The event delves into specific market verticals and appraises new enabling technologies coming on-stream, in order to help attendees assess their business strategy and timing, the technical, consumer and governmental challenges, new business models and opportunities.
Two main application sets are emerging for IoT - consumer applications, driven by the proliferation of smart phones and tablets which can connect to objects, including wearable technology, home automation, healthcare and fitness, vehicles and infotainment; and industrial and government applications, such as infrastructure monitoring, lighting, transportation and process automation.
The event covers the areas of opportunity within IoT that are most likely to succeed in the short term, including:
- Leveraging existing hardware such as smart phones to do more useful things, based on new applications, such as indoor positioning systems connected to other hardware forms such as real time locating systems
- Focussing on closed system implementations in the main, proving strong payback and then rolling out to more locations. This includes smart lighting, building infrastructure and process automation and logistics
- Developing the platforms to start connecting existing disparate systems in one location together.
- Offering new services to consumers that they want but which they do not yet know they want - the biggest opportunity but challenging to do and involves creative new business models, probably where the service is 'free' but paid for in kind by consumer data.
This unique focus has resulted in strong feedback on IDTechEx Internet of Things events such as:
"I found it outstanding in term of organization and quality of the topics."
"Very useful information, answered any questions I had on the topic."
