Geely IG features solar panels

New-energy cars featured at this year's auto exhibition in Beijing, but the IG (Intelligent Geely) from Geely stood out. The compact car is a hybrid electric vehicle which combines a 1.0 litre conventional internal combustion engine propulsion system, an electric propulsion system, and a set of solar cells.

According to Geely, one of the vital elements restricting electric cars from rapid progress is the contradiction between battery cost and mileage endurance: the longer the range, the larger the batteries with higher cost. In contrast, small-sized low-cost batteries mean shorter mileage. As consumer demands for mileage differ, consumers may choose different standards of power systems based upon their actual requirements with the IG. The engine systems have different costs and different ranges from 50 to 150 kilometres.
The car features solar battery panels on the roof and hood which can constantly generate 88W of electricity, providing power from any sunlight. The solar panels also use solar energy to reduce temperature rise inside the cars' interiors attributed to sunlight in summer, substantially lowering energy consumption of air-conditioners.

According to experts, the Chinese government's National Development and Reform Commission has confirmed that 71 hybrid, electric and fuel-efficient car models were eligible for subsidies. The statement added that the government would expand the subsidy scheme over time to include more green models. The announcement comes just a few weeks after five Chinese cities introduced a trial that promised subsidies worth up to 50,000 Yuan ($7,400) for plug-in hybrids and up to 60,000 Yuan ($8,800) off the purchase price of full electric vehicles.
